Cable tie waste [Matt Collings]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183357

In my last few posts I've kinda gone on a touch longer than I anticipated. I'm gonna blame the caffeine for that and offer my apology here.

For this post I'll keep it short n sweet and deliver just the facts that the intended post was going to contain.

I read today that Innocent Smoothies have reduced the amount of non recyclable plastic they send to landfill by 200 tonnes annually just by removing the ring pull from their smoothie cartons.

In my line of work we have a nastier piece of non recyclable material which was introduced to the world in 1958. It's called the cable tie. Or, dependant on where you are from the 'zip-tie' or 'tie wrap'. Now don't get me wrong, the cable tie is a very useful little product and this is proven by its worlwide popularity. But, and it's a fairly big but, it has downsides. It's a single use product, it's non recyclable and in my opinion is one of the most wasteful products used in construction.

Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.; A Day On, Not A Day Off [Ryan Scott]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183358

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that acts of service were the great equalizer. "Everybody can be great," he noted, "because everybody can serve." That's why Dr. King's wife, Coretta Scott King, once said that "the greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the day by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others."

.. Knickers !

Did you know that before 1800 (that's the year BTW .. not the time of day wink) .. no respectable woman wore knickers ?

The history of the knicker is a history of women's rights as much as fashion !
(All this and much more in Rosemary Hawthorne's Knickers - An Intimate Re-appraisal)

But I digress ..

Each year we celebrate a particularly important anniversary with a visit to a significant musical event - whether classic or pop .. formal or casual .. stand up or sit down. And 2012 took us the short journey down the M5 to Gloucester's famous rugby ground on a beautiful sunny summer's evening in June (yes really .. sunny .. in June !)

I need to change what is 'out there' - or do I? [Damian Mark Smyth]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183360

Why do we think that what's out there requires 'fixing'?

love-vs-fear

We live in a world where we feel a need to change things when they are not going our way. We feel anxious, so we try to change the circumstance that seems to have given us this feeling. Yet often we choose the wrong action. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

For instance, I may feel personally attacked by a comment or remark, and I make the choice to respond to it. Only later, (with hindsight) do I see that the person made the comment from a position of fear and was in fact only doing what seemed right to them at the time, to make themselves feel better.

What Have YOU Done Today To Make YOU Feel Proud? [John Murray]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183361

I am listening to this a minimum of once in the morning BEFORE going to work and then once in the evening BEFORE going to bed. More and more I listen to it during the day.

Can I ask you take just a couple of minutes out to listen AND to read the words - they are brilliant. I hope this inspires you every day the way it is inspiring me. So many meanings in these words.

Who do you know that is needy, desperate & skint? Who do you know that is STRUGGLING right now? [Fra

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183366

Quite often, when people want more business or need more business, they are often in a state of need. They even appear needy online, offline, in person, and sometimes its even reflected in the way they dress or firm their handshake is.

When people are in a state of need - their ATTENTION, more than often is focussed on them, themselves instead of the people they can help, with the skills, talents, knowledge and solutions they offer.

When their attention is focussed on them instead of their prospects, they can come across as needy, desperate & skint.

So lets start aligning your focus and attention to ensure it doesn't happen to you...

Who can you help to stop struggling, and start growing?

More importantly, how are you going to find these people?

Hope that gets you thinking...

Talent Management Modelling Is A 'Great Way To Enjoy Retirement' Says Herb [Suzy "find a model" O'Co

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183367

Herb is really enjoying retirement with a little Talent Management modelling to keep him busy, not to mention the extra money coming in as a result. We were delighted to get his latest feedback from an assignment with a company that produces luxurious adjustable beds and chairs. 75-year-old Herb tells us all about his day below.

"This was my second assignment for this company. The venue was a very upmarket furniture showroom in Nottingham. The assignment was a film shoot with voice-overs and I worked with some talented people including Kim the camera lady, who I had worked with on my first job for them. She is excellent at putting you at your ease and helping you to follow her directions.

NATURAL DETOX HELPERS

Water - Chlorophyll - Alkalinity - Electrons

In order for the saying "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food" to be true, food has to be nourishment and detoxifying agent at the same time. When food is digested and broken down it naturally produces unusable bits we call toxins. Nature being the perfect foil for our needs supplies the detoxifying agents we need in the foods we eat. Knowing how to use them can be of great benefit. This article is going to look at some of the easiest ones to use and a couple of other items which help accelerate the detoxification process.

The Fortune is in the Follow Up! [Dylis Guyan]

The fortune is in the Follow Up

The most valuable asset in your business is your "Client List" the second most valuable is your "Prospect List"

Last year I worked with a Financial Adviser, he was doing OK but wanted to take his business to the next level.

When we first met, we established exactly what he wanted to achieve in increased income and converted that into the number and value of sales that he would need to make.

We also established what he had been doing to generate his income to date. I.e. what marketing activities he'd implemented to generate new prospective clients

I was quite impressed; he went to networking meeting on a weekly basis and successfully generated referrals from there. He also did really well when he asked for referrals from existing clients.

So why was he not making more income from those introductions?

Some thoughts on curation [Alan Rae - Business R&D]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183370

As a business owner it's likely you have to do the Sales and Marketing yourself. Probably you've had no formal training in either. Most of what's around is aimed at marketing consumer goods but the chances are you are selling to other businesses - not to the general public.

You know you get business by meeting people but these days they check you out on line as well. So you need material posted that tells the world you know your stuff, you deliver and you're easy to work with.

The question is how much should you do - given that research shows that most people have about 12 hours a week and that's it.

Its worth creating a few pieces that demonstrate thought leadership - a PDF white paper, a couple of slideshare decks and a video or two - all properly tagged and titled for maximum SEO benefit.

I have many weaknesses... [Fraser Hay]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183371

It's true. I do.

Red Heads & Irn Bru are 2 of them wink

My kids say that I should never enter X Factor, and trust me, I won't.

I can't sing for toffee, in fact my kids say I sing as tho I'm eating toffee.

I have some strengths, but I also have a LOT of WEAKNESSES, just like many of my members...

But, what are your STRENGTHS?

...what do you offer?

Can you help me and my members?

More importantly, whether it's your elevator pitch, USP or the tag line on your business card...

What do people GET when they engage with you or buy your expertise or solutions?

Just, what ARE your STRENGTHS?

Do you help businesses REDUCE their operating costs?

Do you help people to become more EFFICIENT?

Do you help people INCREASE Their personal effectiveness?

Do you help people LEVERAGE their staff?

Social Media - who is right? [Ian Calvert]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183372

A question to ask you.........

Over last couple of days I have seen lots of tweets, posts and status updates from Social Media People (who according to their websites are very successful) saying don't send constant messages, blogs, status updates & don't keep re-cycling them - have you seen these?

Yet, on the other hand, there are so many other Social Media people doing just that. There are constantly posting, sometimes two or three times an hour over several hours then once hour before they start all over again.

Great Customer Service from #Amazon [Shelley Fishel]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183375

I just experienced an example of great customer service. Well I think so anyway!!

I received a new iPad mini for my birthday yesterday and downloaded all my apps. I have the Kindle app. Now when I went into the app on the iPad mini, it wanted me to register it. Blowed if I knew what the password would be or which of my email addresses I had used to register the other one.

So I found in the settings the option to contact Amazon. So I did. I sent an email stating that I had no idea what the password was.

Within 10 minutes I had a phone call. A very nice chap checked with me that I did indeed wish to reset the password and he said he would be sending me two emails. One with the reset link and another with a survey. He carried out his word and I have now registered my new Kindle on the iPad mini.

Appliance testing for Landlords [Chris Uren]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183378

Why Landlords Need PAT (Portable Appliance Testing)

Government figures suggest that electrical faults are to blame for around 20% of all fires in UK homes. It is also estimated that at least 30 deaths in the UK each year can be traced to faulty appliances and wiring.

These figures are one of the main reasons that the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1994 was first introduced. Many landlords may believe that these regulations apply only to commercial property but, since 1997, it has been a legal requirement to ensure the safety of all electrical appliances that are supplied as part of a tenancy agreement.

What's covered by the regulations?
