A to Z of good words .. J is for .. [Mike "Freddie" Gordon]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183334

Jackanory .. for UK readers of a certain age wink

Well I am flummoxed to discover that Jackanory is not actually a word (as in dictionary). Simply a fading memory of a favourite TV programme from my youth. And cockney rhyming slang for story (which is quite appropriate .. obviously).

So here's Judy Dench reading Jackanory Jubilee ,, get the grandkids to watch smilesmilesmile

Is procrastination costing you money? [Samantha Kelly]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183335

Procrastination: 'The act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of lower priority'.

How many times have you put off something that you had to do and it cost you that sale or someone else got there before you? I used to do this a lot, I have to admit! But have learned (probably with age mostly) that this can cost not only money but also your peace of mind in some cases!

I know of one person who put off doing something and it cost her a huge opportunity because someone else got in there and sent in an article before she did. And why? Because she was going out that night and didn't sit down for the 30 minutes it took to write her tips that the magazine needed for the next issue.

Stop thinking about it. Just do it!

Take things a day at a time. If you started to think about things like this instead of tackling your whole problems or task all in one go, you can feel overwhelmed.

Make a decision! Sometimes making the actual decision can take head space!

Models Direct Agency Finds Out About Jennifer Aniston Modelling For Aveeno [Suzy "find a model" O'Co

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183336

Models Direct agency has heard news that Aveeno signed up ever-youthful Jennifer Anniston last week as the face of their skincare range.

"We can confirm that Jennifer Aniston will be partnering with Aveeno for skincare," E! News was told by her spokesperson Stephen Huvane. "You can expect to see the results of this collaboration later this year."

Having modelled for brands such as Living Proof and L'Oreal Aniston has plenty of experience in representing beauty products. The actress told People magazine last week: ""I'm very particular about what I put on my face and body, and have been using Aveeno for years so this partnership is a natural fit for me."

Is your business too reliant on good (or consistent) weather? [Laurence Lowne]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183337

I ask that question, since I am seeing too many people say they can't do or go about their business due to the snow.

Sam Kelly has recently written about procrastination, but I think it may well go further than that. Have we simply stopped taking risks or having the ability to function on a day to day basis? A meeting with a team member suggested it is more than a mind set.

I recently wrote about What is your Why? in my blog before the snow fell.

For me, I am fortunate to be in a business that doesn't rely on the weather, but profits from extremes.

Getting cold - great, people turn the heat up and I earn more.

Getting hot - great people turn up the air conditioning, and I benefit, even when they are out and about using their mobile phones.

Benefits of Herbs & Spices - A Review [Ketan JOSHI]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183338

We have circulated an interesting quote amongst our colleagues and partners this last couple of days from Mark Blumenthal (founder and executive director of the American Botanical Council):
"I think there are some botanicals from India that are going to reach a higher level of market acceptance in 2013". Good news if you want to stay healthy. At the same time we saw an interesting scientific review (by Panickar) on health benefits which coincides with this sentiment.

A review by a group at the Diet, Genomics, & Immunology Laboratory (USA) evaluated the evidence available for herbs & spices in potentially improving metabolic syndrome, as well as neuroprotective effects on the brain, and cognitive function in animal and human studies.

Beneficial actions of herbs & spices include:

Mobile job seeking for contracts [Keith Boatman]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183341

Mobile Job seeking in 2013 - BITE launch a new phone app and mobile Job seeker portal
BITE Consulting are a Career Management Consultancy providing Job seeker training and mentoring services, plus marketing and advertising services for contractors. BITE ensure contractors are trained and ready for contracting in London and throughout the UK. The services provided ensure candidates have all of their "personal brand" details up to date and that they are selling themselves in the correct manner to land the contracts which they deserve.
The big question these days is whether or not mobile job applications will take over the traditional job application process. With predictions that mobile devices will take over PCs as the most common web access device worldwide by January 2014, many believe the bile job application process will be inevitable. The new mobile job app gives users access to the latest job postings.

Remarkable Reiki [Mike "Freddie" Gordon]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183342

I am increasingly grateful to my best mate Barry Mapp for introducing me to the practice (or is it a discipline ?) of Reiki during early 2012 .. firstly in the role he practitioner me consumer when I wanted to develop more effective thinking and focussing strategies for business and personal stuff. The impact (as they used to say in the Smirnoff ads) was shattering ! The energy exchange in the process is truly remarkable .. and I've also now adapted a style of self-Reiki which is part of my daily routine.

So in October .. with a bit of quid pro quo (that's another story) .. we agreed to move to he teacher me student role because I had three specific family members who I felt needed some healing hands wink

And delighted to say .. I achieved First Degree status in December 2012 !

I've won two awards! [Elaine Isaac]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183343

During last year a local networking group that I belong to, North Devon Business Alliance, ran an awards competition based on the use of social media in the workplace. There were various awards available including use of Twitter, use of Facebook, Blogging, Online Media and overall award.

I was very pleased to have won the Blogging Award for my blog appropriately titled 'Should I Blog?' as I was up against some stiff competition. As the final award approached I was most surprised to have been awarded the Online Winner of Winners Award. Personally, this has been a massive surprise and achievement for me so I thought it would be nice to share it here with you all.

Kind regards,
Elaine

Four Ways to Protect Your Turf [Linda Eziquiel]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183344

Warren Buffett famously invests in businesses that have what he calls a protective 'moat' around them - one that inoculates them from competition and allows them to control their pricing.

Big companies lock out their competitors by out-slugging them in capital infrastructure investments, but smaller businesses have to be smarter about how they defend their turf. Here are four ways to deepen and widen the protective moat around your business:

Get certified

Is there a certification program that you could take to differentiate your business? For example, a Canadian company that disposes of radioactive waste decided to get licensed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. It was a lot of paperwork and training, but the certification process acts as a barrier against other people jumping into the market and competing.

Is there a certification you could get that would make it more difficult for others to compete with you?

Create an army of defenders

Buzz Phrase: Business Intelligence - is this leading you to "desired goals" [Andrew Field]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183346

African Sun Banner
With a passion as warm as the rising African Sun!

There is a subject which has not been too fully discussed on this network, and that is something we call business intelligence. The word intelligence is a little bit of a misnomer, as much as 'military intelligence' is an oxymoron to some! Basically the phrase was coined by IBM researcher Hans Luhn back in 1958. He defined this as "the ability to apprehend the interrelationships of presented facts in such a way as to guide action towards a desired goal." If you are scratching your head and asking yourself, "what does that mean", then you are not alone.

Listening to your body (and mind!) [Hannah Liversidge]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183347

I have always said it to clients (I mean, it's how I get business after all!) that working too much can cause a negative effect on your business. However, we always give advice and don't always take it!

Many people think, unless this is just myself and my clients, that working all hours of the day will ensure that our business becomes more successful. I, however, think that doing this causes us to become burned out and unable to keep it up, thus even more time is needed to recover - especially as illness can hit when we are run down.

I now have, scheduled in my diary several breaks in my day. Generally these are taken up with personal twitter engagement, cleaning of the house or just doing my tapestry (that still isn't finished!) you may say these aren't officially "breaks" but to me, it's time away from my beeping email inbox and the stress of not doing things quickly enough. If I don't have these breaks I can become fatigued and thus projects are done slowly.

Where Is The SunZu 'How To Start And Grow Your Own Business' ACTIVE Group [John Murray]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183348

In thinking about an excellent comment made recently by Hannah on one of Robert Craven's blogs, I have had a quick THINK.

We are all, and I include myself in this, quick to give bits and pieces of advice on the front page here on Ecademy (soon to be SunZu) regarding start up businesses and on how to grow a business.

Where is the currently ACTIVE, PROACTIVE and HIGHLY POPULATED Group here on Ecademy that is specifically for new Start Up Businesses, How To Set Up A Start-Up Business, How To Grow A Start Up Business etc, all within the one single Group on Business here?

How about someone takes the bull by the horns and sets up such a Group - NOT to sell to that Group but to use their OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE in having started one, grown one and then selling one at a profit, for the benefit of other current and newly-joining members.

Who here on Ecademy has done this and therefore would be willing to form such a Group and moderate it?

Get Past Gatekeepers Fast [Marcus Cauchi Sales Management Training]

http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183349

What My Clients Say About Me
_________________________________________________________________________________

I just got a call from a new client. Today was the first chance he'd had to use the No Pressure/Zero Objection Cold Call framework I suggested to him last Thursday. He talked about 25-30% of the time; she talked 70-75%. He made an up front contract, he did his 30 second commercial, went through the diary dance and secured a meeting on his first dial. That made my day so I thought I'd try and make yours if you are someone who struggles to get past gatekeepers.

Gatekeepers are real people with feelings and fears, a job to do and constant demands on their time. Gatekeepers are doing their job. So are you, when you cold call.

Their job is to:

  • Keep the wrong people out

  • Let the right people in

Why can't I have a free course in how to build my own business? [Robert Craven]

    http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183350

Why can't I have a free course in how to build my own business?

That's it. A simple question (originally from Hannah Liversidge writing a comment here)

... but it got me thinking.

I have heard the comment/question many times before.

This blog is in no way a pop at Hannah. Quite the reverse. She is 100% entitled to her opinion and all I am doing is challenging my own assumptions. After all I never went on such a free course... such things did not exist...

    A list of thoughts:

Why should one have a free course on how to build your own business?
    - why do you deserve it?

Why should one have such a free course on how to build your own business?
    - free? why free???

Why should one have a free course on how to build your own business?

'Promising results' for bowel cancer breath-test [Simon Radley]

    http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183351

Scientists say they have developed a breath-test that can accurately tell if a person has bowel cancer.

The test, which looks for exhaled chemicals linked to tumour activity, was able to identify a majority of patients with the disease.

The British Journal of Surgery reported an overall accuracy of 76%.

However, another scientist said it was unlikely a fully functioning and reliable breath-test would be available soon for the general public.

Scientists are working on breath-tests for a host of other diseases, including several types of cancer, TB and diabetes.

If diagnosed and treated early, the chances of stopping cancer can be good, but there is often little or no outward sign of the disease until it has progressed significantly.

Half Of Men To Get Cancer By 2027, Experts Predict [Simon Radley]

    http://www.ecademy.com/node.php?id=183352

Half of all British men are likely to be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime by the year 2027, experts predict.

Men in the UK currently have a 44% chance of developing the disease.

Women's risk is also expected to increase from 40% to 44% in the next 15 years.

The better news is that proportionally fewer people are likely to be dying of cancer thanks to improved methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Over the last 40 years, cancer survival has doubled, figures show.

The projections, from Cancer Research UK, are based on past incidence and death rates and assume a continuation of trends.

However, to stay in touch with what's happening in the USA I subscribe to The Herman Trend Alerts - worth doing if you also want to know what's happening out there. So check out Joyce Gioia's thoughts on the 2013 workforce scene. Ann
